Barber Families,

My name is Jeff Granger, and it is my privilege to serve as the principal of Shirley A. Barber Elementary School. I was raised in small town Celina, Ohio and began my teaching career in South Bend, Indiana prior to moving to Las Vegas in 2005. I have worked in the Clark County School District for over 15 years and this is my 8th year as an administrator. As an educator, I have been a fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade teacher, math/science instructional coach, dean, and assistant principal (two years being the assistant principal at Barber). I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Master’s Degrees in Educational Leadership.

My wife is a former teacher who now stays at home with our five wonderful children, Adalee, Charlotte, Eliana, Justin, and Rebecca. We love spending time together as a family.  My children enjoy reading and playing games together.  Some of my favorite things to do are play family games, play golf, and cheer on The Ohio State Buckeyes and Chicago Bears.

My philosophy is that our Barber children are our first priority, and I take pride in doing my very best to ensure that each and every student receives the very best education possible to help them become successful citizens and confidently follow their dreams. We will work together to provide differentiated learning experiences that engage and challenge each student.

Being the principal of Barber Elementary School is a responsibility I am honored to have. I look forward to continuing the successes at Barber by working hard, openly communicating with you, supporting collaboration between the school and home, and living out our motto of Work Hard, Be Kind, and Have Fun!  Through a close partnership with staff, parents, and our community, I am confident that we will make our school a place where our students continue to learn and grow academically and socially.  I am dedicated to providing any support needed to provide the best education for our students.

Thank you in advance for your support and commitment to our children’s future and the success of our community. If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me through email at grangja@nv.ccsd.net, or phone at 702-799-5915. I am looking forward to another great year and serving as your principal!

Hey Barber Bulldogs!

My name is Leanna Mackelprang and I am so excited to be your Assistant Principal again this year!  I have enjoyed every second of being at Barber Elementary.

I was born and raised here in Las Vegas, Nevada and education has been a passion for as long as I can remember.  Growing up my mom was a teacher so I spent A LOT of time in classrooms or at school!  I graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a Bachelors in Elementary Education.  My teaching career started at Shirley and Bill Wallin Elementary School where I taught 2nd and 3rd grade for ten years.  At Wallin I discovered that I had a passion for leadership in education.  I decided to go back to school, and I received a Masters in Educational Leadership from Sierra Nevada College and attended the Clark County School District’s Leadership Academy.  From there, I became an Instructional Strategist and had the opportunity to support teachers, while also providing meaningful reading intervention to students struggling with literacy.  I was promoted to Assistant Principal at Barber in December 2020 and I absolutely love this school and community.

I am married to my amazing husband Jared, and we have two energetic boys named Derrick and Maverick who also go to Barber.  We enjoy weekend getaways to Utah, traveling, playing games and watching movies.  When I am able to sneak away for some “me” time, you can find me playing volleyball 2 to 3 times a week in various recreation leagues and tournaments.

It is my goal to continue the Barber traditions and provide a positive, safe, and high-quality education for all students.  I am committed to fostering an atmosphere of trust where all voices are heard, and all decisions are made with students’ best interest in mind.  I believe that students and staff thrive in positive environments that challenge them to be their best and I am committed to facilitating that.  Thank you in advance for your continued support.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  My email address is: derriLL@nv.ccsd.net.  I am looking forward to a fantastic school year!

Dear Barber Families,

My name is Scott Rivera and I am so proud to be your new Assistant Principal. I have been at Barber since the school opened in 2018, and I feel so fortunate that I get to begin my administrative career at a school I already call home!

The 2022-2023 school year marks my 18th year with the Clark County School District. I am originally from Long Island, New York, where I attended St. Joseph’s University and received my Bachelor’s Degree in Child Study with endorsements in both general and special education. During the summer of 2005 I was vacationing in Las Vegas and returned to my hotel room one afternoon to messages from the administrators of Twitchell Elementary School asking if I’d like to come in for an interview. I went to the interview, accepted the position as their new Intermediate Resource Room Teacher, and promptly ended my vacation as I had to be moved from New York to Nevada in less than two weeks.

It wasn’t long after I started teaching that I knew I wanted to go into administration. I completed my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at UNLV in 2011. After receiving my degree, I immediately completed the Clark County School District’s Leadership Academy. At this time, I had a ten-month-old daughter, and another on the way, so I decided it would be best to put my administrative career on hold to focus on my growing family.  During the ten years since first completing leadership, I’ve worked in elementary and middle schools, teaching both general and special education. These positions all helped me gain the valuable experience necessary to be an effective administrator.

I met my amazing wife and best friend while I was here on vacation, and we have three awesome children; Ava, Olivia, and Cruz. We love spending time together, especially at grandma and grandpa’s cabin in Duck Creek! In my spare time you can usually find me around the house working on different projects, or in the garage working on something for one of my many hobbies. In the summer I look forward to swimming and beach vacations, and I enjoy biking when the weather cools off.

It has always been my philosophy that parents and teachers must work together to create the solid foundation necessary for our students to grow and succeed both academically and socially. I am committed to making Barber a safe place where students are encouraged to Work Hard, Be Kind, and Have Fun. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call the school or email me directly at riversj@nv.ccsd.net.  I am looking forward to another great year here at Shirley Barber Elementary School!
